How to use it

  1. Name your tasksChoose how many timers you need, from one to three, and type a name for each one.
  2. Tap a task to start itThe card turns green and the clock runs.
  3. Tap another task to switchThe first one stops at the same instant the second one starts. Tap the running task to pause everything.
  4. Type notes as you goA notes box appears on whichever task is running. Whatever you type is filed under that task.
  5. Press Conclude when you finishYou get a table of every task, its time, its share of the session, and its notes.
  6. Send it where you need itEmail the summary, download it as a CSV for a spreadsheet, or print it to paper or PDF.

Preferences

Type notes right away When you switch tasks, put the cursor in the note box. On a phone this opens the keyboard.
Keep the screen awake Stops the screen dimming while a timer runs. Not available in every browser.
Vibrate on switch A short buzz confirms the switch. Android and some browsers only.

Voice notes

Show a mic button Off. Notes are typed.
Read this first. SwitchTally has no speech engine of its own. Turning this on lets your browser send what you say to its own speech service, Google in Chrome, Apple in Safari, to turn it into text. That is the one thing in this app that leaves your device, and only while the mic is on. Leave it off and nothing ever does.

You do not need it either way. The mic key on your phone's keyboard types into the note box already, and it follows your phone's own dictation settings.

What it does

SwitchTally measures where a block of time actually goes. Instead of guessing afterward, you tap the task you are on and the clock follows you. Because only one timer can run at a time, the numbers add up to the real length of the session, and each task carries its own notes into the summary.

Privacy

Your task names, times, notes and templates are saved in this browser, on this device. There is no account, no sign-in and no server. Nothing is uploaded, so nobody, including us, can see what you record.

This app page has no analytics and counts nothing you do. Our home page counts visits anonymously, and that never involves your timers or notes.

Clearing your browser data, or pressing Clear saved data below, erases all of it for good. The one exception is voice notes, which are off by default and explained above.

Feedback

Tell us how you use SwitchTally, what works and what is missing. It opens an email in your own mail app, and nothing is sent until you press send. Every line is optional. Please do not include names of students, patients or clients.

Common questions

What if my phone locks or I switch apps?

The running timer keeps counting. Time is measured against the clock, not against the screen being on, so nothing is lost.

Does SwitchTally track me?

The app does not. It has no analytics and sends nothing. Our home page counts visits anonymously, with no cookies, and that never includes your timers or notes.

Where is my data stored?

On this device only, in your browser. Nothing is uploaded and nothing is shared. Clearing your browser data clears your sessions and templates too.

How do I save a template?

On the setup screen, type your task names, put a name in the Templates box, and press Save. Load it with one tap next time.

Can I edit a task name mid-session?

Yes. Tap the name on the running task and type. Use Edit names to change any of them.

How do I put it on my home screen?

On iPhone, open it in Safari, tap Share, then Add to Home Screen. On Android, open it in Chrome, tap the menu, then Install app or Add to Home screen. It then opens like an app and works without internet.

Why add it to my home screen?

Safari on iPhone can erase a website's saved data if you do not visit for about a week. Added to the home screen, SwitchTally is treated as an app and your sessions and templates stay put.

Can I have more than three timers?

The free version runs up to three. More features are planned for a later version.

How do I start a fresh session?

Press Conclude, then New session. Your task names and templates stay, the times and notes clear.
